Alexander Wang’s Collection 1 Campaign Goes Back To High School

Anything involving a surreal take on stereotypical Americana has already grabbed my attention, so know I’m biased when I say that I’m all about Alexander Wang’s Collection 1 campaign debut. Using familiar high school tropes like cheerleaders, jocks, and the small-town glitz of local pageants, photographer Brianna Capozzi created a modern update on Americana.

IRL pageant queen and Tiny Miss Maryland USA Laniya Spence wears a sparkly crown with a shiny red fanny pack. The Instagram caption underneath her photo: “She’ll grow up and be president…”

Models Binx Walton and Anna Ewers make for a dashing cheerleader and jock couple, while model Adesuwa poses in front of a ‘90s-sitcom-fake graffiti NYC skyline.

It was earlier this year that Alexander Wang announced he would depart from the NYFW schedule and show in June and December. In June, his Collection 1 drop was heavily infused with American pop culture through the eyes of Wang, a first-gen Chinese American. From bandanas and football jerseys to reimagined stars and stripes and bootleg-esque Chinatown merch, the designer looked at archetypal personas from the biker to the cowboy.

Drop 1 of Collection 1 will be hitting stores in the days ahead, and you can also cop the pieces on alexanderwang.com. Check out the campaign images over at Hypebae, and stay tuned for Collection 2, which should be dropping sometime in December.
