Alternative Suiting: A Fresh Spin On The Traditional Pantsuit

In 2016, the Clinton campaign ignited a feminist movement. From shirts printed with “The Future Is Female” (which originated in New York’s first women’s bookstore in the ’70s) to all-white outfits to signify the suffrage movement to random pantsuit flash mobs, the political race was fueled by fashion.

The secret Facebook group Pantsuit Nation, for example, became more than a page on a social platform, it became an initiative. Now, Pantsuit Nation is a national organization with more than 3.8 million members.

While the pantsuit is professional, appropriate, and tailored to an individual’s style, today’s power suit is anything but traditional—in fact, it’s liberating. Women are exploring beyond the classic menswear-inspired silhouette and reclaiming suiting for what it is—a fashion-forward rebellion against the patriarchy and confining hemlines.

Inspired by the alternative suiting looks that were roaming the streets during New York Fashion Week, here are 10 suiting separates to incorporate into your wardrobe.
