5 Style Trends Beyoncé Gave Us In ‘Lemonade’

Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album Lemonade dropped on Apple Music and Spotify today, and for those of us who have been crying watching Homecoming on Netflix, it’s time to let the emotions continue to flow. It’s been a Bey kind of week, with news of a live album and the announcement of two more Netflix projects. Now, for those of us who’ve been sans Tidal (which is…most of us?), we can revisit Beyoncé’s culture-defining album.

Lemonade was dropped exactly three years ago today, and there’s a new addition to the re-release. The streaming versions of the album include a dream-pop “Original Demo” reimagining of “Hold Up”, which both Ezra Koenig and Father John Misty have writing credits on. To celebrate the re-release of an album that couldn’t have been more powerfully felt with exuberance, anger, pain, and renewal, here are some looks that have set the tone for the last few years of fashion.

The Romance

Lemonade was filled with the sort of countryside romance looks that we’re seeing all over Instagram lately—the most iconic piece from the video, a yellow Roberto Cavalli dress with free-flowing ruffles, predicted the poufy flourishes we’ve seen on the runways the past few seasons.

The Fur Coat

In a perfect moment of both athleisure and glamour, Beyoncé wears a Hood by Air fur coat with a Yeezy crop top and leggings. Even three years later, ’80s-workout-instructor-meets-Old-Hollywood-recluse remains a big mood.

The Bodysuit

Bodysuits were elevated from summer-weather staple to a moment of transcendence when Beyoncé wore a bejeweled Yousef Al Jasmi bodysuit alongside Serena Williams, who wore a Brandon Maxwell piece.

The BDSM Lite

The BDSM community’s influence on fashion has been well-documented, particularly over the last few years as it’s become increasingly more mainstream. (Even GOOP sells it now!) One of Beyoncé’s costumes in Lemonade involved a Zana Bayne bra reminiscent of Jean Paul Gaultier’s famed cone bra, paired with Maxior earrings.

The Headpiece

Beyoncé’s House of Malakai headpiece preceded face jewelry trends we’ve seen on the runways, like at Gucci’s Fall/Winter 2018 show, where models wore ornate crystal headpieces. At Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring 2017 show, similarly ornamental pieces studded with gems and metals were spotted.
