Chance the Rapper’s Campy Pizza Thriller Might Be A24’s Next Big Hit

The film looks like all sorts of campy fun as it tells the story of a small town where pizza delivery boys are getting murdered. Dax Lycander, played by Chance, is a delivery boy who lives to tell the story, and he teams up with Astrid, played by Deadpool’s Zazie Beetz, to catch the culprits behind the crime spree.

The film is described as “the story of a ghost, a werewolf and a pretty s—–y pizza place,” and it also features Stranger Things star Joe Keery. The film is written and directed by Austin Veseley, a frequent Chance collaborator. The two have worked together on music videos for “Sunday Candy” and “Angels,” and the director also stars in the film as Sean, one of the slain pizza boys.

In a time when horror movies generally veer towards the more serious and terrifying, like A24’s other horror movies Hereditary and The Witch, this seems like a refreshingly fun, campy slasher flick. The film is set in the fictional town of Kingfisher, billed with the tongue-in-cheek slogan of “a great place to be alive.”

Vesely talked to the Chicago Tribune about the film in 2015, saying that it originally started as an idea for a short film.

“I was actually really inspired by this novella by George Saunders called CivilWarLand In Bad Decline,” he said. “He has ghosts as a part of the universe. George Saunders is always really good about this: He puts you into a world and he doesn’t explain the rules to you, so you figure it out as you go. So he created this world [with] ghosts that just existed and were part of the fabric of the universe. That was really a big inspiration to me to make a movie [that] would also do that.”

There isn’t a set release date yet, but Slice is expected to be released in theaters later this year.
