In what is truly a match made in heaven, Cher is releasing an ABBA tribute album titled Dancing Queen and the first single debuted this week.
Because Cher is a true queen — and a consummate businesswoman — she saw a perfect opportunity to pay tribute to the pop group after starring in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, a box-office hit that’s grossed $96 million in just three weeks and inspired countless memes. It’s also a movie that’s the most fun you’ll have in theaters since Magic Mike XXL. In the film, Cher makes her grand entrance via helicopter to sing “Fernando,” and yes, it’s as great as it sounds.

Cher’s cover of Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) also pays tribute to her own ‘90s club revival, with a beat reminiscent of hits like “Believe”. In fact, the ‘90s-house-flavored cover was produced by “Believe” producer and longtime collaborator Mark Taylor. Dancing Queen will be released on September 28th, an announcement the singer made while doing a press tour for the film.
“I’ve always liked ABBA and saw the original Mamma Mia musical on Broadway three times,” Cher said. “After filming Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, I was reminded again of what great and timeless songs they wrote and started thinking, ‘Why not do an album of their music?’ The songs were harder to sing than I imagined but I’m so happy with how the music came out. I’m really excited for people to hear it. It’s a perfect time.”
The iconic singer will be honored at the Kennedy Center later this year alongside Reba McEntire, Philip Glass and Hamilton. And if you’d like to take your Cher fandom a step further and see her cover mashed up with Madonna’s “Hung Up,” don’t worry, the internet has you covered.
