Very few moments in the day are as bare as the moment you wake up. We each have our own kinks and quirks that help us get out of bed, but few of us are brave enough to share them with the world. Introducing A Cool Morning, a deep dive into the intimate daytime rituals of our coolest friends and beauty innovators.
As the co-founder of K-Beauty favorite Glow Recipe, Christine Chang is basically a walking, talking encyclopedia of skincare and Korean beauty. Like most K-beauty fanatics, Chang is obsessed with the staples for a dewy, radiant glow: sheet masks, misting, and surprisingly minimal routines. But, how does she juggle her routine while being a boss babe, and a mom?
By taking some “me” time in the morning, of course. Whether she’s forced to sheet mask in the car, or reaches for a last-minute mist, Chang’s morning beauty routine is always key to starting off her day on the right foot (err, face?). Below, we talk to Chang about her 5-minute skincare routine, her daughter, and more.
What’s the first thing you do every morning?
“The first thing I do when I wake up is mist – since skin is so prone to losing moisture overnight, I always rehydrate my skin when I wake up. I also make sure to cuddle with my daughter for a few minutes every morning before diving into work-related emails.”
Do you have a morning workout routine?
“Unfortunately no! The most cardio I get in the morning is the mad dash it takes to get ready, pack snacks and walk my daughter to school. Fitness is a priority for me in 2019 so I bought a mat to do morning stretches.”
Shower at-night, morning or both?
“I shower at night always. If I have time for a bath, I make it a full self-care ritual and light a candle and multi-task by doing an exfoliating treatment, a soothing sheet mask and a hair mask.”
Daily alarm time? How many times do you hit snooze?
“My daily alarm is at 7:30AM. Once my daughter is up, it means I am too!”
If you’re running late, what’s the one thing you have to do?
“Even if I’m running late in the morning, I always try to take my daughter to school every day.”
“I take a hard-boiled egg to go and then I have a coffee when I get to work.”
Weirdest morning beauty habit?
“If I have an event or big meeting that day, I like to work a sheet mask into my morning routine (sometimes even in the car to work). It immediately plumps the skin for better makeup application afterward.”
Tell us your morning hair-care routine.
“I tend to wash my hair the night before so that I’m ready to go in the morning. I get my haircut in a way where it’s pretty low maintenance and I like the air dried slightly mussed-up hair look.”
How much time do you spend on your skincare routine?
“At night time, my skincare routine takes about 10 minutes. I’m obsessed with the Avocado Mask – I normally have very dry skin and use it as a sleeping mask. I love waking up to buttery soft skin the next morning. Due to all the traveling I’ve been doing, my skin can get very dull so I’ve been relying on the Sweet Chef Ginger + Vitamin C Serum to brighten up my complexion. It feels incredibly lightweight on the skin and if I’m feeling particularly dry, I’ll double-serum with the Sweet Chef Kale + Vitamin B Serum for an extra dose of hydration.”
How long do you usually take to get ready for the day?
“Getting myself ready in the morning takes me five minutes tops as I lay out everything I need the night before. If I have the opportunity to sleep one more minute, I’ll take it!”
What’s the one product you could never leave the house without putting on?
“SPF is such an important part of my daily routine. I don’t leave the house without it and make sure to apply sunscreen in any weather condition. I use the Make P:rem Blue Ray Sun Gel daily because of its lightweight, cooling texture and amazing sun protection benefits and I reapply to my face after lunch.”
The first word/thing that popped into your head this morning?
“Usually it’s ‘Whose foot is that?’ (My daughter likes to wake me up by jumping on me). I’m in Korea on a business trip at the moment and I woke up feeling grateful to be in Seoul with a full day of inspiration and meetings ahead.”
