Time to take a shot…
In case you needed drunken validation for that point in the night when someone shouts “Who wants a shot!” a researcher in Mexico has your back.
According to Science Daily, a study conducted by the Center for Research and Advanced Studies in Mexico found that the agave plant contains substances that can improve absorption of calcium and magnesium — minerals crucial to keeping your bones healthy. (I always knew margaritas were keeping me young, but I didn’t know why.)
In the study, mice that were given fructans from blue agave produced almost 50 percent more osteocalcin – a protein that indicates the production of new bone – than mice who did not. Additionally, their bones increased in diameter after eight weeks of ingestion.
“The consumption of fructans contained in the agave, in collaboration with adequate intestinal micriobiota, promotes the formation of new bone, even with the presence of osteoporosis,“ study leader Dr. Mercedes Lopez told the Independent.
According to Forbes, tequila can also potentially lower cholesterol and can alleviate tension (until, um, you take another shot and start causing tension yourself.) So drink up, but keep in mind that you’ll need those healthy bones after one tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor.
