Here are the nominees for the 2018 Golden Globes
My attention was already piqued for this year’s Golden Globe nominations when we learned that Jordan Peele’s Get Out would be submitted in the comedy category, much to the confusion of everyone — seemingly Jordan Peele included. The Golden Globes are like the Academy Awards’ weirder, more fun younger sister, and this year’s nominations did not disappoint (for the most part).
Esquire’s Tyler Coates put it best, writing about the absurdity of the Globes categories and their confusing binaries. “Naturally, it widens the playing field to more nominations, but it also feels increasingly strange in our post-modern era when most TV comedies feel dismal and bleak, and a blockbuster horror film about racism in our modern age falls into the comedy category alongside a biopic about a controversial figure skater who suffered abuse at the hands of her husband and mother and a musical starring Hugh Jackman.”
It’s almost like we’ve evolved beyond the traditional categories of “Musical or Comedy” and “Drama”. Many times, films are both. Many of the noms were expected choices — Big Little Lies for “Best Television Limited Series,” The Shape of Water nominated for seven categories; Willem Dafoe for his truly gorgeous portrayal of a Florida budget hotel manager.
There were some not-so-great surprises: Michael Showalter’s The Big Sick received zero nominations, and Jordan Peele didn’t earn expected nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Also surprisingly, Greta Gerwig didn’t receive a Best Director nomination — and, in fact, the category was all male directors.
You can read the complete list of nominees below, and tune in Sunday, Jan. 7, for the live broadcast on NBC hosted by Seth Meyers.
