Very few moments in the day are as bare as the moment you wake up. We each have our own kinks and quirks that help us get out of bed, but few of us are brave enough to share them with the world. Introducing A Cool Morning, a deep dive into the intimate daytime rituals of our coolest friends and beauty innovators.
Jess Teves, a.k.a. the Editor-in-Chief of Cools, always walks in with two things: a cup of coffee, and a smile on her face. While I trudge into the office with the tiniest amount of energy I could harness in the a.m., I always wonder: How does she do it?
With a 6:15 a.m. alarm, the strongest coffee you can find, and a NuFace, that’s how. Below, we talk to our head honcho about her morning Food Network binge, her daily read, and more.
What’s the first thing you do every morning?
“Turn on the coffee maker, which I set every evening before I go to bed with Cafe Bustelo—I don’t function until I have my first sip, and I like my coffee strong.”
Your morning workout routine?
“My husband and I bought a stationary bike, so I ride for 30 – 45 minutes every morning and then do about 15 minutes of pilates or yoga to start my day off with the right intentions and energy. Sometimes if I’m stiff I’ll also lay on the foam roller for a few minutes.”
Shower at night, morning, or both?
“Both, typically! I like to feel clean, and the subways sometimes make me feel grimy, so the more the merrier.”
Daily alarm time? How many times do you hit snooze?
“6:15 on the dot. I never hit snooze.”
If you’re running late, what’s the one thing you have to do?
“Apply sunblock—always Isdin.”
“Avocado on gluten-free Wasa crackers with two organic eggs. I always add hot sauce, too (Crystal Hot Sauce is my favorite).”
Weirdest morning beauty habit?
“I don’t know if it’s necessarily weird, but I use a Nuface Facial Trainer for 15 minutes while on the bike, while watching the Food Network. I really, really like food.”
Tell us your morning hair-care routine.
“I typically only wash my hair two to three times a week, so mornings are about low-maintenance touch ups to tame frizz—Oribe’s Anti-Humidity Spray and Amika’s Polished Perfection Straightening Brush are my latest go-tos.”
How much time do you spend on your skincare routine?
“I spend quite a bit of time—more at night, but I believe in the power of a good skincare routine. I use Dove bar soap, and have since college—it doesn’t dry out my skin nor does it irritate my eyes. Following that, I use Medik8 Vitamin C Serum, followed by Theraplex Hydrolotion and then Isdin SPF 50 sunblock. For makeup, I use Cle de Peau Beaute Concealer in ivory, Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Mascara, and Buxon lip gloss in White Russian.”
How long do you usually take to get ready for the day?
“Hard to say—I guess it’s dependent on how much time I have, but anywhere from 20 – 30 minutes.”
What’s the one product you could never leave the house without putting on?
“Moisturizer and sunblock!”
The first word/thing that popped into your head this morning?
“Omg, get off of me—my son, who is about to turn two, was basically sleeping on top of me because he was sick! I really love it, but also sleep is just non-existent right now.
Your favorite morning read?”
“The Daily Word from Unity Church. My mom gave me a subscription a few years ago and I love its digestible but uplifting qualities—it’s really just motivational thoughts around centering your mind and spirit, so you can be present and live your best life. I highly recommend.“
What’s on your nightstand right now?
“Five books I haven’t read, but I know I will! A pile of Hearos ear plugs (I can’t sleep without them), a big bottle of water, and my dearest friend’s glow oil, called Supernal (I apply a little to my face regularly and when I’m feeling dry).”
What’s the current ringtone on your alarm?
“I think chimes, but I can’t be sure. Lol”
Coffee, tea, or go-to morning drink?
“STRONG coffee (always Cafe Bustelo) with a big scoop of Vital Proteins Collagen Powder and whole lactose-free, organic milk.”
What’s the last thing you did before you headed out the door today?
“Kissed my son and husband 12 times (wait, maybe 20) and then sprinted out the door because I was late.”
