The Eco-Conscious Hairstylist That Swears By Cold Showers

Very few moments in the day are as bare as the moment you wake up. We each have our own kinks and quirks that help us get out of bed, but few of us are brave enough to share them with the world. Introducing A Cool Morning, a deep dive into the intimate daytime rituals of our coolest friends and beauty innovators.

In some way, shape, or form, you’ve probably heard about Kevin Murphy: The Australian hairstylist-turned-beauty-mogul is the owner of one of the most beloved haircare brands in the industry and single-handedly created the iconic “beachy” look that every major name wears during the summer. Plus, we love an entrepreneur with a purpose: Since day-one Murphy’s made sure that every product under his line is above standard, with eco-consciousness being a top priority (the brand is even making the switch to recycled ocean plastic packaging), making him the innovative answer for beauty’s problematic environmental impact.

So, between front-running one of the most popular hair care brands around and traveling the globe for shoots and projects, how does Murphy pamper himself? With a cold shower, a quick skincare routine, and a spritz of a fan-favorite fragrance. Below, we take a deep dive into the morning routine of Kevin Murphy.

What’s the first thing you do every morning?

“The first thing I do is drink a couple of glasses of water.”

Do you have a morning workout routine?

“I try and mix it up as much as I can. I do anything where I have to push something, followed by something I have to pull, and add rowing in between each exercise.”

Shower at-night, morning, or both?

“I’m a morning shower person and I take ages, I don’t know where the time goes.”

Daily alarm time? How many times do you hit snooze?

“I set my alarm for 5 a.m. and hit the snooze at least twice, sometimes three times.”

If you’re running late, what’s the one thing you have to do?

“Floss, rinse, and brush my teeth.”

Favorite breakfast?

“Scrambled eggs with Avocado.”

Weirdest morning beauty habit?

“I have to do a full body scrub every day and rinse with cold water. I get out of the cold shower, and just be cold for a minute or two. It feels really good just to be cold and accept it.”

What does your morning hair-care routine consist of? Go-to products?

“I do a lot of co-washing, meaning washing with conditioner. COOL.ANGEL is my go-to product because it adds a tiny bit of sliver to my hair, so my gray has a clean, silver tone.”

How much time do you spend on your skincare routine? Go-to products?

“I shave every day using my own SHAVE.CREME, with a vegan Aesop Shaving Brush. I cleanse morning and night: In the morning morning I use a retinol-free serum (Rejuvaphyl Rejuvenating complex) followed by Cosmedix Hydrate+ Daily Moisturizer; at night I use a mild retinol serum (Rejuvaphyl Rejuvenating Complex 0.25% Retinol) followed by a relief balm (Societe Calming Relief Balm). I’m going to say in total it takes about 10 minutes per day.”

How long do you usually take to get ready for the day?

“Under an hour including breakfast; if I skip breakfast, then 40 minutes.”

What’s the one product you could never leave the house without putting on?

“I’m obsessed with fragrance, so it would have to be Orage by Louis Vuitton.”

The first word/thing that popped into your head this morning?

“Where am I, and why is my alarm going off so early?”

Your favorite morning read?

“I’m not really a reader in the morning. I like to sit and stare out the window.”

What’s on your nightstand right now?

Willy Vanderperre #865

What’s the current ringtone on your alarm?

“I’m not sure, something generic that Apple tells me to use.”

Coffee, tea, or go-to morning drink?

“Coffee: black no sugar.”

What’s the last thing you did before you headed out the door today?

“Checked that I didn’t leave the gas on. I sometimes forget to turn off the stove so I always have to triple check.”
