From one streetwear impresario to another — it’s rumored that Off White’s Virgil Abloh might be taking over Kim Jones’ spot as men’s artistic director of Louis Vuitton. Jones, who brought streetwear to Louis Vuitton and had a blockbuster collection with Supreme last year, made a surprising decision on Wednesday to exit the label after seven years.
His last show was, of course, star-studded — Naomi Campbell walked in the show with Kate Moss, who said it was “emotional, yes, but it’s on to the next chapter.” Abloh sat in the front row of the show in the inner courtyard of the Grand Palais. It was reported that Jones was getting a bit teary-eyed backstage.
When Jones took over the label in 2011, he married Louis Vuitton’s classic sensibility with an emphasis on streetwear — tracksuits, graphic tees, etc. The Louis Vuitton x Supreme collaboration was the pinnacle of this marriage. Where does Jones go from here? The strongest rumor is that he may be heading to Burberry, whose designer Christopher Bailey is leaving after 17 years. Burberry already has some streetwear cred with their recent collab with Gosha Rubchinskiy. Will Jones take it to the next level? TBD, darlings.
