The Drugstore Essential That This Beauty Writer Swears By

Very few moments in the day are as bare as the moment you wake up. We each have our own kinks and quirks that help us get out of bed, but few of us are brave enough to share them with the world. Introducing A Cool Morning, a deep dive into the intimate daytime rituals of our coolest friends and beauty innovators.

If you think you’re busy, then just take a look at Lauren Mazzei’s lengthy schedule. On top of being one of the key players behind Tiffany & Co.’s digital presence (she’s the IT Business Analyst of Digital Marketing over at the legendary jeweler), she’s also staying busy by contributing to some of your favorite fashion and beauty outlets (cc: InStyle, Shape, New Beauty, and more)—all while running her own 100k+ social media following.

So, when she catches a break, how does she wind down and pamper herself? With a fresh cup of iced coffe from Dunkin’ Donuts, her strict hair care routine (you will never catch her with wet hair), and her mix of *gasp* drugstore and luxury skincare favorites. Below, we take a quick dive into Mazzei’s essential morning routine.

Spending my days in the sun 🌞 #thesurflodgerebag

What’s the first thing you do every morning?

I wake up and check my emails – my blog, work, and personal – work messenger, and social media. It’s safe to say my career relies heavily on digital.

Do you have a morning workout routine?

No, I usually don’t work out in the mornings. Sometimes I try, but end up sleeping through my alarm (not a morning person). I head to spin class, boxing, or go for a run after work.

Shower at-night, morning, or both?

Shower in the morning!

Daily alarm time? How many times do you hit snooze?

My daily alarm time is usually 8:45AM. I hit snooze as many times as, what seems like, humanly possible (again, not a morning person). I’ve always been a night owl and find that I work best at night. I’ve never believed the stigma that you have to be an early riser to be productive.

If you’re running late, what’s the one thing you have to do?

I have to shower and blow-dry my hair. I’ve always kept a rule to never go to an event, meeting, or work with wet hair.

Favorite breakfast?

Normally I’ll have egg whites with cheese and an iced coffee from Dunkin’. When I want a morning treat instead, I’ll have the Chocolate Chip Coconut Bread from Jack’s Coffee, which is unbelievably good.

Weirdest morning beauty habit?

I always moisturize my face with Pacifica Beauty’s Super Flower Face Oil. It’s something I do before prepping my makeup by dabbing a few drops onto my skin and blending. If it’s the weekend and I’m not putting on makeup, I’ll use the Erno Laszlo Hydra-Therapy Gel Cream.

What does your morning hair-care routine look like?

My favorite shampoo & conditioner sets are by gisou & Gloss Moderne. While they’re a little more expensive, the quality is incomparable to others for me. After washing my hair, I use the Cuvée Beauty Blowout Bombe for a DIY blowout. You just add a little on your fingertips and run through damp hair before blow-drying. It makes your hair unbelievably smooth and silky, and smells like champagne! Then, I’ll sometimes add a little of the gisou Honey Infused Hair Oil to my ends for added moisture.

How much time do you spend on your skincare routine?
My skincare routine in the morning is very simple and usually takes about fifteen minutes. I use the Fresh Beauty Soy Face Cleanser to brighten and tone my skin, then spot treat and scrub certain acne-prone areas of my face with an acne-fighting cleanser. I use an exfoliator once a week in the morning, as well, with my favorite right now being the Palmer’s Coconut Sugar Facial Scrub. I received a sample from Beautycon and I’ve been hooked ever since. It smells exactly like a pina colada and makes you feel like you’re on a tropical island.

At night, I’ll wash my face with the Paul & Joe Cleansing Gel, and put on the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask before I go to sleep.

How long do you usually take to get ready for the day?

Usually thirty minutes! My hair dries really quickly.

What’s the one product you could never leave the house without putting on?

Honestly, probably just your basic Chapstick.

Dreaming of the long weekend… 💭

A post shared by Lauren Mazzei (@laurenmazzei) on

The first word/thing that popped into your head this morning?

“What time is it?”

Your favorite morning read?

I usually hop right out of bed after reading my emails and quickly get ready. I would love to have time to read, but I love sleeping more.

What’s on your nightstand right now?

On my nightstand I have a large Poland Spring water bottle, a tissue box, hair clips, a ton of jewelry, Laneige Water Sleeping Mask, Elizabeth Arden Intensive Lip Repair Balm, and the La Mer Creme de la Mer Moisturizing Cream.

What’s the current ringtone on your alarm?

Just that basic ringtone that most people have. I usually have it on silent.

Coffee, tea, or go-to morning drink?

I love iced coffee so much and my favorites are from Dunkin’ & Jack’s.

What’s the last thing you did before you headed out the door today?

Made sure I turned the steamer off and that I remembered to bring my laptop.
