There are not many singers I’d want to hear cover Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” — why mess with perfection, etc. Lorde, however, might be the one to make some magic happen.
In celebration of Australia voting for marriage equality — and on the Australian leg of her tour — Lorde covered Whitney Houston’s 1987 smash hit with a short rendition in her equal turns husky and ethereal alto.
“Congratulations on that same-sex marriage vote…I’m very proud of you,” she said before taking a fan’s pride flag and draping it around her shoulders. Said fan was, needless to say, pretty stoked that Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor grabbed their pride flag.
ELLA CONGRATULATED AUSTRALIA ON THE SSM VOTE THEN I WAVED MY PRIDE FLAG WITH SO MUCH FUCKING PRIDE AND THREW IT AT HER, I MISSED THEN JUMPED ON THE BARRIER TO GRAB IT AND SHE DANCED AND SANG I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY THAT FLAG WAS IN MY BRA! @lorde (ignore me singing) pic.twitter.com/OWODhE4oOP
