Being the Duchess of Sussex isn’t all curtsies and public appearances. As a royal family member, Meghan Markle’s new role requires a great deal of diplomacy and restraint. She’s dealt with a number of media spectacles, mostly having to do with her father, Thomas, and half-sister, Samantha. But it’s not just family she has to watch out for, it’s friends, too.
“Meghan has lost touch with some of her close friends from before the wedding, which has been tough,” a source tells PEOPLE. “She’s finding it hard to know who to trust.”

Aside from a vacation with George and Amal Clooney, and recent jaunt to Toronto to see her former stylist and friend Jessica Mulroney, Meghan’s circle of friends has started to tighten. It makes sense, especially after a childhood friend sold photos of her to British tabloids, the Cut reports. Meg’s ex-husband Trevor Engelson, can’t be forgotten. He tried to make a sitcom out of their failed relationship. And of course, there’s the on-going interjections from her extended family.
“It was very wearing on her. It’s her private life,” the source continues on the topic of Meghan’s family’s collusion with the press.
Despite her own family drama, Meghan has been spending time with her new stepfather, Prince Charles, who hosted her and Prince Harry at the Castle of Mey in Scotland over the summer. Her plate is also full with the upcoming Australian tour she and Prince Harry will be going on next month, which has been described as a “Baptism of Fire”.
