Guys, would you wear plastic shirts and shorts? Or both? Earlier this week, ASOS previewed their Spring 2019 collection at the men’s edition of New York Fashion Week (aka NYFW:M). While most guys have been sporting athleisure in recent years, ASOS makes a case for metallic colorways and sheer menswear.
The presentation took place on Monday at Azul, a rooftop bar set atop of SoHo’s Hotel Hugo. Overall, the collection was futuristic, and inspired by “cult classics such as [the movies] Blade Runner, Tron and Total Recall,” a rep for the brand notes in a statement.
Even though it was a summer presentation, models were decked out in layers of sheer fabrics. Some of them looked like they were transported from the 1999 Disney movie Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century, with their hot pink tops layered underneath PVC trench coats and jackets.
PVC has been a womenswear trend for a few seasons now, but like most fashion trends today, it’s being borrowed by the boys. As gender distinctions continue to blur, there’s a high chance that men may soon start embracing life in plastic.
