The Fan’s limited-edition collection is an homage to the princess of R&B

The influence of Aaliyah’s style and sound can be felt in so many evolutions of streetwear and R&B. The latest designer to pay tribute to Baby Girl is London designer Elle Azhdari with her unisex streetwear line, The Fan.

It’s the Iranian designer’s third collection, and she’s built a following of fans like Dev Hynes, Theophilus London, Jean Campbell, and more. The collection dropped today at Selfridges and on her site. Azhdari talked to W’s Gillian Sagansky about the collection and why she chose Aaliyah as the focus.

“She was so authentic, and it wasn’t just evident in her music and dance routines but also in her style and the way she carried herself,” Azhdari told W. “When we were approached by Selfridges London to create an exclusive collection for their Music Matters theme, Aaliyah instantly came to mind. Girls wanted to be her and the guys wanted to be with her.”

The face of the collection is Siobhan Bell — an up-and-coming London DJ known for spinning bouncy Jersey club and ‘90s R&B. In other words, she’s a natural fit for a tribute to Aaliyah. The 11-piece collection consists of a baseball hat, short- and long-sleeved tees, sweatshirts, hoodies, and a bomber jacket. Snap up the collection while you can — only 50 to 150 pieces were made of each style.

And if you’re now in an Aaliyah type of way, check out 19-year-old Jimir Reece Davis’ — Aaliyah superfan and music producer — documentary on the singer.
