Cardi B is skipping out on a live performance at tonight’s MTV VMA awards, but she will still make an appearance. Ahead of tonight’s show, TMZ has learned from a source close to the production that Cardi still isn’t ready to start performing yet, after the birth of her daughter Kulture.
According to the source, Cardi will either “do a monologue or partake in some sort of skit instead.” At the end of July, the “I Like It” singer told fans that she would not be touring with Bruno Mars this fall.
“As of today, I’ve decided I won’t be joining Bruno [Mars] on tour this Fall. I thought that after giving birth to my daughter that 6 weeks would be enough time for me to recover mentally and physically,” she wrote to her fans. “I also thought that I’d be able to bring [Kulture] with me on tour, but I think I underestimated this whole mommy thing.”
It hasn’t been confirmed whether or not Cardi will actually be at tonight’s show in person, or if she will make her appearance a la pre-recorded footage. We’re looking forward to some Cardi airtime either way.
UPDATE [2:43pm EST]:
TMZ caught up with Cardi outside of the London hotel in NYC this afternoon. Cardi said she will only perform again when she’s ready. She is still under the weather, but that hasn’t stopped her from putting out a new music video for her song “Ring” featuring Kehlani.
When TMZ asked Cardi about the Nicki Minaj and Travis Scott fued, Cardi didn’t hesitate to side with team Scott. Yesterday, Nicki went off on Twitter about losing the #1 spot on Billboard’s Chart this week to Travis Scott, which could make things awkward at the VMA awards this evening.
Cardi and Nicki have also had a rocky past, and have often jostled over the title of being New York’s top female rapper.
We will certainly be tuning in tonight.
