If there’s anyone suited to direct a music video for the high camp, late summer vibes of Kali Uchis, it’s Nadia Lee Cohen. Hypersaturated with color, surreal, and featuring one of the most beautiful grocery stores I’ve ever seen, the video takes us from a gloomy Kali pushing a cart through a store to Tyler, the Creator popping up out of the grass to grow a garden family.
Taking the idea of grow-a-boyfriend to a stoned level, Kali grows Tyler from her packet of boyfriend seeds and watches him change along with the seasons. In the press release, the singer said this about her video: “We can find solace in the fact that we have to go through the bad stuff to truly get to the good. Just because you’re losing at the moment doesn’t mean you’ve lost yet. The storm may be scary now but it’s how your flowers bloom later, and paradise is just beyond the rainbow.”
If that doesn’t get your weekend off to a dreamy start, I don’t know what will. And if you want more of a Nadia Lee Cohen fix, check out her recent project “A Guide to Indulgence,” a supremely gorgeous and monstrous look at beauty perceptions.
