How Patrick Ta Became Everyone’s Favorite Beauty Boy

Contrary to the amount of beauty gurus touting their talents on social media, becoming an official makeup artist to the stars is not an easy feat. Only a handful are brave enough to swipe their feathered highlighter brushes across the globe, leaving a permanent mark on the over-saturated world of cosmetics.

Enter Patrick Ta, celebrity makeup artist and founder of Patrick Ta Beauty. Ta is far from your average, run of the mill beauty guru: he has worked with just about every beautiful face in Hollywood (cc: all of the Kar-Jenners, Gigi and Bella HadidAdriana Lima, Ariana Grande—seriously, everyone), plus used his enormous social media following to create a fully flourishing cosmetics business, proving he’s not just part of the beauty industry, but one of the most integral personas helping shape the makeup community today.

So, what is happening within the mind of one of the world’s most sought-after beauty moguls? Below, COOLS chats with Ta on his fruitful career, plus his essential beauty tips for the summer.

Tell me a bit about your career: How did you start to get into makeup? How did you grow your career into the success it is today?

I’ve always been interested in creating something beautiful. When I was younger, I thought I wanted to be an interior designer or chef, but it was my roommate in Arizona who ultimately started my fascination of makeup. She was always wearing makeup, and I admired the confidence she would gain from it.

I’ve gotten where I’m at in my career today through dedicating myself to always growing as a makeup artist. Starting off working at a makeup counter, it was important to me to always challenge myself to try new looks I’ve never done before. I also credit the amazing women in my life who have given me the opportunity to work with them, and eventually turned into my family.

Why did you decide to create a makeup line?

I’ve always gravitated towards women — my mom, my sister, my girlfriends. I wanted to create products that empower women to feel confident and beautiful in their own skin, the same way women have made me feel. If I didn’t have these women in my life, I wouldn’t be the makeup artist I am today.

You’ve worked with major names like Gigi Hadid, all of the Kardashian-Jenners, etc.: what’s one highlight of your career that you would label as your “making it” point?

After a year of working at M.A.C in Arizona, I decided to move to LA and work as a freelance makeup artist. A moment that really helped my career take off was when Shay Mitchell found me on Instagram, and requested I do her makeup. Thinking back to that moment still gives me butterflies. Another ‘making it’ moment would have to be when I saw everyday people posting themselves on social media using Patrick Ta Beauty. I never thought that people would recognize and admire my work and brand as much as they do!

The digital age has made the beauty community much stronger. How has social media impacted your career, positively and/or negatively?

I think social media is so important for anyone who is creative because it allows you to share your work with people all over the world and interact with them.

When I began planning Patrick Ta Beauty, social media was a huge factor in a lot of the decisions I made. I wanted to make sure that my brand had a strong presence on social media, and that people would be able to instantly know what Patrick Ta Beauty was about from one post.

I love seeing people from all over the world using my products—it’s such an amazing feeling to know that people love something that you created. I also use it to get feedback and hear what people would like to see from the line in the future. I always take their thoughts and opinions into consideration.

What’s your go-to beauty routine for the summer?

I am a huge believer in taking care of your skin. I start my routine with La Mer’s The Cleansing Foam to remove all dirt buildup from the day. Next, I use La Mer’s The Cleansing Micellar Water, followed by the luscious Crème de la Mer, which is hands down my all-time favorite cream. I finish off with the silky La Mer The Eye Concentrate. I don’t usually wear makeup, but if I’m a little oily I will occasionally powder myself. Great skincare is the key to keeping myself looking fresh.

What’s the one beauty tip you think everyone should follow during the summer ?

Embrace that glow! Summertime is the best time to show off some skin and your fresh new tan. Step outside wearing my Major Glow Body Oil for an intensified tan and an out-of-this-world glow.

What are your makeup hacks for keeping your makeup intact during the summer heat?

I love a dewy look, but I completely understand not wanting to look greasy. I suggest using a setting powder in the spots you tend to get oily. It’s also important to take into consideration the products you use, and how they handle heat. The reason why I created my Major Glow Highlight Mist, was because I noticed mist highlighters tend to last longer than a powder or liquid highlighter.
