Call them what you will — naked sandals, barely there, squint-or-you’ll-miss-them straps — but an overwhelming theme for summer shoes is less-is-more. As a welcome contrast to the season’s other major footwear trend, chunky vacation sandals, the current barely there sandal picks up from last summer where styles by The Row and Celine (then with an é) left off. It’s thanks in part to these luxury brands’ minimalism influence that many of the newest arrivals of warm-weather shoes have straps that have been whittled down to near floss-width and, in general, reduced in number just a few fastenings around the foot.
While the designs might not look like much, that’s kind of the point. A simple, strapped sandal offers a pared-back touch to an otherwise bold look but can as effortlessly complement the most minimal of aesthetics. And as seen in just a taste of some of the latest iterations below, this silhouette has been interpreted with bright colors, PVC details, and unique heel designs. In other words, making 2019’s most uncomplicated shoe design something to be excited about.
