Princess Nokia, your favorite New York rapper, just announced that her project A Girl Cried Red will drop on Friday, April 13. It will be her “emo mixtape” she told Dazed in February. “Yes, it’s not just a little touch of [emo] or it blended into hip hop. It’s real alternative music.”

She talked to Dazed about her new mixtape. “Blood, like a girl cried blood. It’s taken from my favorite song, ‘The Robot with Human Hair’.  I have a lot of references from this Gavin Dance album, and the first line in the song is ‘Your eyes are bleeding.’ I always loved that image, and it’s a big motif in my work. The mixtape name is supposed to mean a girl cried blood, or a girl cried fury. There’s so many interpretations of what red is.”

For listeners of Princess Nokia’s Beats 1 show, The Voices In My Head, her emo-themed mixtape won’t come as a surprise. She even had an episode called “Your Eyes Are Bleeding” where she spoke about her love for Paramore, losing her virginity to System of a Down, and more. In the Instagram announcement for the mixtape, she’s wearing a Slipknot shirt and giving the camera the finger, and it’s pretty great. The project’s title is apparently from a lyric in the song “The Robot With Human Hair” by Gavin Dance. Princess Nokia (aka Destiny Frasqueri) released her last album 1992 Deluxe in September 2017 as her debut studio album.

A Girl Cried Red was produced mostly by Tony Seltzer, a Brooklyn producer, with Elijah Rawk of Phony Ppl. She described the crew as a bunch of “New York City kids and metalheads”. The “G.O.A.T” musician will also go on a four-month-long tour in the U.S. and Europe, with an appearance at Coachella on Sunday, April 15.
