Sade Will Contribute a New Song to Steve McQueen’s Movie

Steve McQueen, director of 12 Years a Slave, will feature a new song by Sade in his upcoming film Widows. The song is titled “The Big Unknown” and will play over the end credits of his adaptation of the UK crime series with the same name.

Widows stars Viola Davis, Robert Duvall, and Daniel Kaluuya and tells the story of four armed robbers who are killed in a heist gone wrong, and their widows — Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, and Cynthia Erivo — decide to finish the job. The script is written by Gone Girl writer Gillian Flynn.

“The Big Unknown” is Sade’s second new song for a film this year, with “Flower of the Universe” made for A Wrinkle in Time soundtrack. Band member Stuart Matthewman told Rated R&B that Sade is working on a new album following 2010’s Soldier of Love.

Widows will make its world debut on Sept. 8 at the Toronto International Film Festival and will be released in theaters Nov. 16.

“It was an honour to work with such a legend. Sade is an incomparable talent and incredible artist who so rarely releases new material,” said McQueen in a statement, “but luckily the original series of ‘Widows’ had deeply resonated with her.”
