A Hypothesis: Is Selena Gomez Actually Living Her Best Life?

“Life is great,” Selena Gomez said on an Instagram Live story on Wednesday. Gomez took to Instagram to answer all of her fans burning and “thought provoking” questions about her new work. To be clear, Gomez said that she “doesn’t like to answer questions about her personal life.” Fair.

Towards the end of her Instagram Live video, Gomez admits that she loves Drake’s new album Scorpion, but “Travis [Scott’s new album Astroworld] has her heart.” Gomez also calls out Nicki Minaj’s new album Queen as one her favorite new releases at the moment.

Reports are saying that Selena Gomez is living her best, carefree life sans Justin Bieber, but bubbly, saccharine joy is not what I saw in this video. Gomez comes across as content, but reflective when a fan asks her to describe her new, unreleased album.

“Creatively it’s in a really great direction. I just wanted it to feel, kind of, what was going on in here, which was a lot,” Gomez said while pointing between her browline.

Of course, she’s been spending her summer days aboard yachts with friends (and good for her!), but that doesn’t negate deeper emotions that might belie the surface.

The “It Ain’t Me” singer split with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber earlier this year, which has been covered by the media ad nauseum. Bieber proposed to model Hailey Baldwin only months later in July, but Gomez has kept busy by focusing on her career.

She just released a collaboration called Selena Gomez x Coach, which features a range of handbags and ready-to-wear. Gomez is also one of the producers behind Netflix’s controversial series “13 Reasons Why,” based on a high school suicide.

Gomez’s new album is due out sometime this year, but her single “Back To You” has already made waves. She just finished filming a movie in upstate New York. Gomez also admits that she has a ton of other upcoming projects in her Instagram Live video.

She’s busy, sure, but is she actually happy?

Gomez has been very candid in the past about her mental health and dealing with Lupus. In 2016, she cancelled the tail end of her Revival tour to focus on her wellbeing.

“Tours are a really lonely place for me,” Gomez told Vogue in April 2017.

“My self-esteem was shot. I was depressed, anxious. I started to have panic attacks right before getting onstage, or right after leaving the stage. Basically I felt I wasn’t good enough, wasn’t capable. I felt I wasn’t giving my fans anything, and they could see it—which, I think, was a complete distortion.”

Since then, Gomez has stepped back from the center-stage spotlight.

“I don’t even live in LA anymore,” she told Good Morning America in June. “I don’t pay attention to trying to get people to like me as much.”

When I first read that quote, her words struck me as resigned, as if she was just tired of it all. Now, it’s easy to see that Gomez is anything but resigned, she’s strong but soft-spoken, at ease yet hardworking. She’s not so cut and dry.
