We Should All Dress Like Shakira

Today is a very special day. No, we’re not talking about National Puppies Day, or the fact Titanic won 11 Academy Awards on this day in 1999. No, we’re talking about an anniversary much more monumental.

Five years ago today Columbian singing sensation Shakira released her first English-speaking album, Shakira. It delivered a stellar collaboration with Rihanna. It debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot 100. But most of all, it reminded us of Shakira’s incomparable, hip-adhering aesthetic that she has all maintained in the near two decades she’s bridged the gap between Latin and English pop. To celebrate the fifth anniversary of Shakira, we tracked the superstar’s five most iconic outfits, below.

1. Western-meets-Boho chic

It’s incomprehensible that it’s been almost 20 years since Shakira emerged from the ocean, flew over mountains and crawled through mud to conquer pop culture, and even more unbelievable she did it in brown lace-up leather pants and crop top with matching cuffs. She gets extra points for this audacious belt buckle — throw away your cowboy hat, no one does the Western trend like Shakira.

2. Lady in Red

Okay, the beach waves? These silver accents? None of this would be remiss for an extra night on the town. Early 00s red carpet Shakira changed the game.

3. Bodysuit Bonanza

Did you say a one-sleeved, one-legged, cut-out catsuit? Don’t mind if I do. The “Shewolf” video, released in 2009, starred two of the most memorable one-pieces in music history. A nude number that was the perfect accompaniment to Shakira’s flexibility and the slinky black bodysuit that showed off just enough skin. Well you might not to be brave enough to don these in public, throw on jeans and you have a full look. Unfortunately, 480p just does not do them justice.

4. The Naked Dress

The naked dress has seen a stratospheric rise in the past few years, but Shakira was in before all the rest. 2014’s “Can’t Remember to Forget You” (featuring Shakira in an impressive five different hair styles, and of course, Rihanna), saw the songstress don a sheer dress with red embellishments and a skirt consisting of mere tassels. Paired with some matching pumps, it was a real moment to remember.

5. Leather and lace forever

This the kind of two-piece you might see on any given influencer this Coachella (especially if I AM GIA has anything to say about it). The studded and buckled bootleg leather pants are everything, and this is a strong testament for the return of low-rise — a prospect that’s currently causing much pearl-clutching. Admittedly, however, it’s the sheer maxi cardigan held together by a single button that’s cleared my skin and paid my rent, a style that will no doubt be resurrected very soon.
