Alexandra Palace London Art Print

Alexandra Palace, or Ally Pally as it's fondly known, is a North London favourite! It truly became 'The People's Palace' in 1990 when it was made public owned, to keep it a place of escape and wonder for the people of London. The lofty Victorian architecture is truly stunning from the exterior, and when inside the glass vaulted ceiling and dome, flanked by palm trees transports you to the tropics! The Old Truman Brewery Illustrated Art Print Of London

$51

At Wolf & Badger

The Old Truman lives. Walk down Brick Lane- through the canvas walls of street art, through hits and whiffs of warm Bengali spices, to arrive as this massive imposing structure. Stop to marvel. The 160-feet-high, 1,000-ton brick boiler house chimney, with the Truman's name down the side. Truman's was a large East London brewery and one of the largest brewers in the world at the end of the 19th Century. Today it is East London's revolutionary arts and media quarter, is home to a hive of creatives, independent shops, and a vintage market. This print brings back fond memories, when I used to work near Brick Lane, and spent my lunch break wandering through the gullies and vintage markets in search of interesting pieces of art. Blood Moon New York Illustrated Art Print

At Wolf & Badger

Quintessential New York. A Blood Moon, distant sounds of smooth jazz. A print perhaps inspired by a Paul Auster detective story. The illustration features the city's romantic wooden water towers, which are every bit as iconic as the Empire State building or the Chrysler Building. There are more than 10,000 water towers around the city. Another iconic symbol, the zigzagging metal stairs that many people associate so closely with the look of New York. They're a refreshing escape. They're a terrifying safety hazard. They're an eyesore. They're a beloved part of the urban fabric. A lovely graphic print of the magnificent ceiling of London King's Cross. The criss-crossing steel structure unfurls like a tree from columns in front of this elevation and folds down around the space. "It is the greatest station building, ever," declares architect John McAslan, and it is certainly impressive. Its main effect is a mighty oomph as you enter, from whatever direction, caused by the abundance of space and the unity of the structure. It is big and single-minded and has a generosity to which we have grown unused. A stark black and white print to enhance the magnificence of this much overlooked architectural gem. -Sold Unframed- Printed on premium 350gsm lightly textured thick Matte Paper. Designed in Brixton. It's always sunny at the Barbican Conservatory. Such a happy place even in winters with people relaxing, sketching, practicing watercolours or just having a wander about with coffee. This illustration took me a good while to compose, but I absolutely love it. The abundance, the colours, the warmth. But it's truly amazing how the Barbican has so many surprises within. One of the most iconic examples of Brutal architecture. The conservatory wraps around the huge fly tower that supports scenery for the theatre beneath your feet, and while the concrete of the Barbican is still very evident, it adds to the overall effect. It feels like a part of a dystopian movie set, where the plants have taken over the concrete! This is the capital's second biggest conservatory after Kew, and quite a hidden gem. -Sold Unframed- Printed on premium 350gsm lightly textured thick Matte Paper. Designed in Brixton. No 1 Croydon, also nicknamed the 50p building, or the 'wedding cake' was built by the legendary Richard Seifert in 1970. To me this looks like a lego building, a jigsaw puzzle with pieces locking together in place. Love it or hate it- this one cannot be missed, especially every time you whizz through Croydon on the overground. It occupies a busy roundabout that links the centre of Croydon with the suburbs. The influence of Le Corbusier evident. Each floor's elongated octagon has a letterbox window on the exposed ends, every one sticking out like a mini Falling Water, rejoicing in the dramatic effect of its cantilever. 'Croydon makes sense as a town to be approached by jetpack, where paranoid androids hum early Human League songs in the underpasses and flying saucers land on top of shopping centres…' - John Grindrod, author of Concretopia Print sold unframed. St. Pancras & The Red Piano Illustrated Art Print

$51

At Wolf & Badger

St. Pancras & The Red Piano: Illustrated Architecture art print of London's famous Kings Cross St. Pancras Underground station, and a Red Piano. St Pancras Station was opened in 1868 and is one of the wonders of Victorian Gothic Architecture and one of the most elegant stations in the World. The building is remarkable for being constructed largely from materials brought by rail from the Midlands, including the sandstone, red brick and the ironwork of the station roof and staircases. Spot a red piano? St. Pancras London, is famous for it's public pianos, for any one to play. It was just a regular day when the station had a surprise visitor. Sir Elton John himself. If that wasn't enough of a highlight, he starting playing on a piano. delighting an unsuspecting crowd. Before leaving, he left a note on it: "Enjoy this piano. It's a gift. Love, Elton John." In this print I thought of celebrating the moment and featuring his famous 'Red Piano' against the mammoth Gothic backdrop of the St. Pancras clock tower. -Sold Unframed- Printed on premium 350gsm lightly textured thick Matte Paper. The bright aquamarine windows in the backdrop of white, the glazed ceramics on the main entrance facade, the patterned black grills on the door, are some of the reasons why I just absolutely love this building and Art Deco architecture! Described as, "a sort of Art Deco Wentworth Woodhouse - with whizzing window curves derived from Erich Mendelsohn's work in Germany, and splashes of primary colour from the Aztec and Mayan fashions at the 1925 Paris Exhibition." In 1931 Ohio- based vacuum cleaner makers the Hoover Company commissioned Wallis, Gilbert and Partners to create a factory on the Western Avenue in Perivale. The Art Deco building was constructed using "Snowcreate" which is a white concrete that always will stay looking like new even after the harshest of British weathers and is decorated with bright coloured faience (glazed ceramic inspired by ancient Egypt). At night the building is illuminated with fluorescent green light - which makes the building visible to airlne passenger arrivals to nearby Heathrow airport. * Print sold unframed Printed on premium 350gsm lightly textured thick Matte Paper. Elephant & Castle. Unrecognisable without the mammoth block of geometric slab flats and that quirky red elephant ushering locals into the dilapidated shopping centre, earmarked for demolition but somehow shambled on! Alexander Fleming House is not the usual grey and brown 'in your face' Brutalism. It is one of Erno Goldfinger's masterpieces, touted as the ugliest buildings in London. It was then granted a Grade 2 listing in 2013. I wanted to capture in this print, the image that comes to my mind when I close my eyes and think of Elephant & Castle. It is not dull and soulless like people describe it, but rather bright. A white-blue chessboard and that little red elephant with a castle on his back! It is a rather odd but memorable statue. *Sold Unframed* Printed on premium 350gsm lightly textured thick Matte Paper. Designed in Brixton. Printed professionally in London. Brooklyn Dumbo Art Print of St Ann's Warehouse. A print inspired by my recent visit to New York. Walking through the derelict buildings in Dumbo, interspersed with newer gentrified cafes, restaurants and multi million loft apartments, I was struck by this really old brick building with large arched doors and windows under the massive Brooklyn bridge. The St Anne's Warehouse which has opened a theatre for performing arts, used to be a tobacco warehouse back in 1860. I love that the refurbishment has still preserved the original character of the building, highlighting the stark contrast of earthy tones of the warehouse to the modern steel and wire Brooklyn bridge running above it. The Welbeck Street Car Park Art Print

$51

At Wolf & Badger

The un missable diamond-patterned facade made of pre fabricated concrete this multi-storey brutalist building was designed by Michael Blampied & Partners and opened in 1971 to service the new Debenhams flagship department store on Oxford Street. Its unusual design consists of a tessellated façade of prefabricated concrete polygons, the bottom point of each slotting alongside one of the corners of another. The frame is open to the elements, acting like the radiator grill of a car in that it ventilates fumes from the interior. For this, I wanted to try a different style, that accentuates the sharp geometric diamond patterened facade of the building. The car park was denied listed status by the government heritage body Historic England, and probably just a matter of time before it gets bull dozed for another mall, hotel or super store of some sort. Dalston's local community continues to be well represented by the Rio. London's Turkish film festival began here. The bus stop outside the building was renamed as 'Rio Cinema' in 2012 after thousands of people successfully petitioned Transport for London. The cantilevered barrel vaults have skylights running the full width of the garage which together with windows in the side walls and wide entrances bathes the interior with natural light. Le Corbusier'S Unité D'Habitation Art Print Poster

$51

At Wolf & Badger

Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation is arguably the most influential Brutalist building of all time. With its human proportions, chunky pilotis and interior "streets", it redefined high-density housing by reimagining a city inside an 18-storey slab block. Completed in 1952, Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation in Marseille has been blamed for launching a thousand brutalist concrete apartment blocks around the world. (including the mammoth Kanchenjunga tower in Bombay) The Unite d' Habitation was the first of a new housing project series for Le Corbusier that focused on communal living for all the inhabitants to shop, play, live, and come together in a "vertical garden city." Le Corbusier believed the tower block was the solution for rehousing the masses that had been displaced during the second world war, and that high rise building could be used to create spacious city homes with the same amenities as a typical street. Unlike a typical apartment block, this arrangement meant that these access corridors - known as "streets" - only needed be accommodated on every third floor. There are just five in total. The Industrial Skeletons Of Hackney Art Print

$51

At Wolf & Badger

The Industrial Skeletons of Hackney On the train while passing over Regent's canal through the gritty back lanes of Hackney, I have always gazed in wonder at these mammoth ghostly gas holders that dominate the skyline looking specially magical at sunset. In the 200 years that the UK has been using gas power, the country has got used to the distinctive sight of "gasometers". These gas holders have stored coal gas (town gas) and later natural gas for the UK's urban areas, but now all but a handful are obsolete. These industrial iconic structures are at a risk of demolition. Though they are now defunct, it's undeniable that they continue to play a part in British culture. For artists they have a dystopian edge. Making for gritty backdrops in shows like Luther. As well as the uniqueness of their outline, the gas holders are a testament to Britain's role in creating the Industrial Revolution. Today we can see a sort of revival, trying to make gasholders hip. There is a 'Gasholder park' at King's Cross. Apartments built within these metal frames are selling at premium and frankly exorbitant prices. Trellick Tower Art Print Poster

$51

A Trellick Sunset. Goldfinger's design is based on his earlier and slightly smaller Balfron Tower (in Poplar, east London), and is in effect a sibling building. The tower was completed at a time when high-rise tower blocks were going out of fashion as local authorities were beginning to realise the social problems they caused. It was said to have inspired JG Ballard's novel, High Rise, in which residents collapse into anarchy and wage war on each other's floors. A destiny of desolation and demolition seemed inevitable. Although Wendy who runs a bookshop in the city, and a resident of the Barbican insists that the novel is more reflective of life in the Barbican Estate! Something unexpected, something astonishing, has happened. Trellick has clawed out of the abyss. Against all the odds, it has hewn a renaissance from the concrete. Crime and disorder have virtually evaporated. Lifts glide, boilers hum, management works. Tenants adore it, Blur sing about it, directors and advertisers film it, T-shirt designers transpose it, architects study it, coach-loads of tourists photograph it. Trellick's transformation is the closest urban renewal gets to fairytale - one which planners hope will become a model for Britain. It is a story of a flawed ideal, a vilified architect, a doomed vision and tenants who refused to give up. Above all, it's a story of the fickleness of fashion. Sold unframed. London is home to over 10,000 foxes. When I first moved to the city, it was thrilling to see foxes slinking down the alleyways. And years later, it's still exciting to spot one. They seem to belong to the city, adapting themselves to the urban climate and society. In spring I spotted cubs playing, and then this family of foxes very nonchalantly crossing the road. This 27-storey slab block was a testbed for Ernö Goldfinger's (yes goldfinger!) utopian housing ideals. The most striking characteristic of the building is the composition of volumes that makes up its distinctive profile. Reinforced concrete gives the building its rigid structural grid, which visibly frames each residence. In a letter published in the Guardian at the time he explained: "The whole object of building high is to free the ground for children and grown-ups to enjoy Mother Earth and not to cover every inch with bricks and mortar." Goldfinger believed the ideas demonstrated by Balfron could offer the best of design to the masses, as an alternative to the slum housing that was still common throughout much of Britain in the 1960s. London has some of the most striking pieces of Art Deco architecture. And the magnificent Art Deco Facade of the East Stand is one. I first came across this beautiful structure, just by chance while biking to Finsbury Park. The East Stand, containing the famous Marble Halls, is a Grade II listed building. Built in 1936 to compliment the Victorian houses in the surrounding area, it was constructed in the Art Deco style of architecture which was popular between the wars. The Highbury project was ambitious in its scale and reach, the first stand completed being the West Stand, designed by Claude Waterlow Ferrier and William Binnie in the Art Deco style which opened in 1932.
