Founded in 1666 and once home to the Black Eagle Brewery which was once of the world's largest brewing companies. The Old Truman Brewery is now a thriving arts and media quarter. 20 years were spent renovating the space to transform it into the vibrant space it is today. One of the most well known examples of Brutalist architecture in the United Kingdom and perhaps the world is the imposing Barbican Estate Building. As strange as it is to think today the building now surrounded by London's Finance District was built on one of the most bombed areas of London during World War II. Welbeck Street car park was designed by Michael Blampied and Partners in 1971. The unique structure which features diamond-patterned facade made up from prefabricated concrete was denied listed status last year and Westminster Council has recently approved the demolition of this amazing brutalist structure to make way for a ten storey hotel. We strongly object to the demolition to this amazing building on the grounds of its staggering beauty and architectural importance to the area. Trellick Tower is without a doubt the most famous social housing block in London. The 31-storey block of flats in Kensington London was designed by architect Ernő Goldfinger and built in 1972. Guarding the entrance to Howth Harbour is the distinctive Howth Harbour Lighthouse with it's signature Georgian house attached. The building is steeped in history having served as lighthouse from 1818, a lighthouse keeper's residence until the introduction of electricity in 1955, a defensive stronghold taking advantage of it's strong circular wall and it was even used as a landing point for weapons for the Irish Volunteers by author Erskine Childers in 1914. Known as One Kemble Street and CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) House depending on who you speak to but it will always be the Spacehouse to us! Not only is Tate Modern is home to one of the most famous art galleries in the world but it is also a true London icon. Formerly a working power station before the being renovated and transformed into a gallery the building was known as the Bankside Power Station. Built to replace a ferry that allowed people to cross the Liffey river and still standing over 200 years later the Ha'Penny Bridge is the most cherished of Dublin's landmark. Located right in the heart of London's financial district is the imposing Lloyds Building. In 1986 when the building was only 25 years old it was listed as a Grade I building, becoming the youngest ever building to receive the listing. Interestingly just like the iconic Parisian Pompidou centre the interior of the Lloyds building is designed to be uncluttered on the inside with all services for example ductwork and electrical piping on the outside. Officially renamed as the Elizabeth Tower to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee in 2012, the Clock Tower as it was known, is more fondly known by it's iconic nickname 'Big Ben'. The tower is home to the 14 tonne Big Ben bell and is currently undergoing some major refurbishment and crucial conservation work which means that Big Ben won't chime regularly until 2021! However, the chimes will continue to be rung for special occasions during the four-year restoration period. Never Ordinary" is Battersea Power Station's tagline and we couldn't agree more, there is just something incredibly special about this iconic building. Recent refurbishment of the building to convert it from an industrial use building to a residential use building has brought a whole new lease of life to a once jaded area. One of our favourite bridges in Dublin, it's in the smaller details of this structure that the real beauty of O'Connell Bridge is to be found. Hawkins House is one of the most despised buildings in Dublin. A product of its time no doubt but we think there is a strange and eerie kind beauty to this modernist structure that maybe goes unnoticed. Soon, this building will be torn down to make way for a new development. Once home to a rotating restaurant the BT tower is now sadly closed to the public. Having gone through many different guises including spells at The Post Office Tower, The Telecom Tower and the GPO Tower. When it was built it claimed the title of the tallest building in the United Kingdom, a title it held onto for nearly 20 years. One of the most interesting things about the BT Tower is the secrecy that shrouded its location for many years. Due to the communications network that was housed in the tower it wasn't until 1993 that the location was officially acknowledged. Original illustration by Jando.
