Sounds COOL(S): Songs To Shake You Out Of A Rut

You’re over your Spotify mixes, your YouTube playlists are becoming repetitive, and wading through your muso friend’s ever-pretentious song suggestions is less appealing than listening to Nickelback’s “Photograph” on repeat for the rest of time. We get it. To relieve your decision fatigue, we’ve asked the hottest rising artists to compile their favorite tracks of the minute.

Here, JOSEPH shares the songs to get you moving and shaking you’re way out of a summer slump.

Natalie:

1. Mike Viola, “Number On My Brain”

First of all, I love everything Mike Viola. Second, this song is about appreciating all you have in life and gratitude always shakes me out of a rut.

2. Brittany Howard, “Stay High”

This one gives you an easy feeling. It’s the moment you let it all fall off your shoulders.

3. Lizzo, “Boys”

This. Woman. I know you know what I mean. This song gets me moving and feeling sassy. She’s shaking our whole world out of a rut.

4. Joseph, “Fighter”

Meegan’s voice grabs me by the collar and gets me on my feet for the fight of life!

Allie:

5. MUNA, “Number One Fan”

How can you not love this? All three of us girls love this song. It’s been a bit of an anthem recently. Brings me back to myself and being proud of the work i’m doing, the way I look, and not giving weight to the haters.

6. HalfNoise, “Know The Feeling”

I’ve had so many moments where I was in my head or feeling low and I’d get in my car, roll down the windows, and blast this through my speakers. Such a jam.

7. Okey Dokey, “Always Never”

This song. I found it the first week I moved to Nashville and it’s been a constant for me. I love everything about it.

8. Cortes, “Facing My Fear”

We met Andy when we opened for James Bay. You always wonder what music is going to come out of someone. Well this one was an immediate “holy shit” moment for me. I’ve listened to it so many times when i needed something to jar me out of whatever state of mind I’ve been in that I wanted to change.

Meegan:

9. Chromatics, “Shadow”

I first heard this song right after a breakup. It both simultaneously gave melody and lyric to my feelings and brought me up out of them with it’s heavy drum beat at the same time.

10. Karen O, “Turn The Light”

Similarly to Shadow, I found this song in the same moment of darkness. It feels like a starry night turning into sunrise and a new beginning. New beginnings always give the opportunity to shake off what’s become stale and held you down.

11. Trudy and the Romance, “Is There A Place I Can Go”

This song has followed me around in coffee shops, friends cars, and while I’m running errands. Every time I’d feel myself brighten up and quickly search for who it was that was singing and making me feel this way! It’s cemented in my brain now who it is and it’s one of my go-to feel good songs when I need a pick-me-up.
