Stripes can be a tricky pattern to style. You either know what you’re doing or you don’t, and one false move with striping will land you with a completely unflattering look. And, as stripes can go in any direction, there’s no single trick to know with the pattern. What works vertically probably won’t work horizontally, and vice versa. And diagonal is another story entirely.

So, as this is a beginner’s guide, we’re going to stick to vertical stripes—the easiest to style, and hardest to find. Vertical lines are just about always flattering: the up-and-down direction lengthens and slims. For this reason, the distinctive pattern is the easiest to pair.

Your best bet is to find striped trousers. We love a wide-legged, flowy pair, preferably with a high waist. In black-and-white, not only are your striped trousers classic, but also easy to team with literally any color.

As we’re still waiting for those temperatures to rise, you should pair your stripes with a big and bright sweater. A cool color like blue or violet is always the right choice. And then all you’ve got to do is accessorize. Our recommendation? Trendy, shapely bag with round sunglasses and maybe a hat. And just like that—lesson complete.
