We may be halfway into the New Year, but 2020 is still a blank canvas—which means, there’s plenty of time to travel. For me, that means unintentional sunburn, pool cocktails, and an ocean view (usually, stateside because I’m on a budget).
The freezing weather doesn’t mean you have to flock to the nearest beach, however. There are plenty of chic yet delightfully funky destinations to choose from this winter (and beyond). So instead of booking a vacay to Bali (or in my case, Florida), check out these five surprisingly fashion-forward (And, yes. Instagrammable) locations.
Puglia is quickly becoming the “holiday place du jour,” for Americans and Europeans alike. And who could blame them? Puglia is the ideal place to vacation. It has a rustic charm, top-notch olive oil, and beautifully restored hotel-like farmhouses (AKA masserias).
Portugal has popped up on my Instagram feed more than once as one of the places to go. (Which isn’t too shocking, considering the country has come up on more must-visit lists than I can count.) But there’s more to Portugal than Instagram lets on—if you travel just a wee bit south, you’ll find the hidden gem of Algarve.
San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
Mexico isn’t just spring breaks in Cabo. In fact, there’s a lovely little colonial town (that even your grandmother would like) called San Miguel de Allende. It’s filled with lavish landscapes, quaint bed-and-breakfasts, and must-visit art galleries.
Marrakech, also known as the “Red City,” is filled with magic, from one-of-a-kind markets to beautifully built palaces and mosques to the winding alleyways of the historic Medina. Bonus: Marrakech is home to Le Musée Yves Saint Laurent — a museum entirely devoted to the work of (Yes, you guessed it!) Yves Saint Laurent.
Helsinki is known for its design and minimalist architecture, and yet you’ll almost never see Finland’s capital city come up on travelers’ bucket lists. If you’re into high-end architecture, saunas, and locally-sourced seafood, however, Helsinki is definitely worth the trip.
