Supreme Unveiled Their New Jean Paul Gaultier Collaboration With A Nod To The Brand’s Past

Madonna’s daughter, model Lourdes Leon, is following in her mother’s famous footsteps. On April 2, Supreme revealed that the 22-year-old will be one of the faces of their new collaboration with Jean Paul Gaultier. The connection? Gaultier was the designer that created Madonna’s cone bra corset on the 1990 Blonde Ambition tour—arguably one of her most iconic looks of all time.

The Supreme collaboration features the same graphic screen print elements that were a signature of the Gaultier brand in the ‘90s. The style modeled by Leon is a pair of red straight-leg pants that show a woman wearing a shirt with a pretty straight forward message: “fuck racism.”  In an interview with Vogue, Gaultier explained his reasoning behind the collab: “I have been including elements of sportswear in my collections from the very beginning. It has been one of my codes and my obsessions, I even developed a line ‘Junior Gaultier’ at the end of the 1980s [with that focus].” He added: “With Supreme, this inspiration will find its way to a new generation.”

In the last five years, Supreme has become known for coveted collaborations that boast waiting lists, astronomical resale prices, and lines wrapped around the corner of the store. They have worked with brands like Louis Vuitton, Comme des Garçons, and Thom Browne, so Jean Paul Gautier seems to be a logical step in their progression towards luxury-meets-nostalgia.

Outside of a teaser photos on Supreme’s Instagram, not much is actually known about the collection. In essence, it feels like a way to take a brand that was known for artful fashion moments on popstars like Madonna and David Bowie in the ‘80s and ‘90s, and give them a 2019 hype spin.

The collection will be available on April 11 on supremenewyork.com and in stores in New York and Chicago.
