SZA Might Be Releasing Her Album Sooner Than Expected

SZA dropped a few big surprises during her performance last night at Power 105.1’s Powerhouse festival. First, fellow headliner Cardi B appeared onstage, and then the singer announced another surprise, which was that the follow-up to her 2017 smash-hit CTRL might be released before the end of the year.

In a backstage interview with New York City’s Power 105.1, SZA said that the new album would be more intimate than her last.

“This time that’s my only focus, I just want it to be better than before. Maybe not even better but it’s whatever. I want it to be 100 percent honest to whoever I am in this moment. Because that is the only way it will work,” she said. “But I just personally think now it’s just about getting to the root of who I am. But faster, clearer, more concisely. Like just learning the understanding of self.”

Last night’s show was all about the female powerhouses in hip-hop, and SZA performed some of the hits from her platinum debut album, including “Love Galore” and “The Weekend.” Then, Cardi came out on stage and the duo joined forces for their song “I Do,” which they also performed at last year’s Coachella.

Watch the video of their performance below, and in the meantime, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that SZA will be singing us — in her confessional, soothing style — through the holidays.
