Taylor Swift shared her first political Instagram post on October 7, setting off an internet frenzy, and now she’s doing it again. On Wednesday morning, Swift posted on Instagram information about voting early in the upcoming midterm elections.
“Something I wish I knew about when I was 18 and voting for the first time: ✨EARLY VOTING✨. It makes it so quick and easy to go and cast your vote before November 6. Early voting starts TODAY in Tennessee and goes to Nov 1 ??,” she posted in a caption.
She also included a link in her bio to early voting dates for each state.
Her political posts have been a surprising shift for the Reputation singer, who hasn’t spoken out on political issues for most of her career. It was on October 7 that she shared an Instagram post encouraging her 112 million followers to vote in the midterm elections and also spoke out against Marsha Blackburn, a Republican running for Senate in Tennessee.
“Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values,” Swift wrote.
When the singer shared her first post about voting, registration saw an immediate spike. The director of communications for Vote.org told BuzzFeed they saw “65,000 registrations in a single 24-hour period since T. Swift’s post.”
Since her first political post, she’s become a strong supporter of voting, also speaking about it on stage at the 2018 American Music Awards. Taylor Swift made history at the AMAs by garnering a total of 23 awards.
“This award and every single award given out tonight were voted on by the people, and you know what else is voted on by the people,” she said, “the midterm elections on November 6.”
