Into the trenches! Sartorially speaking, the trench coat dates back to 1901, when the first World War commenced. Once known as the battle royale, the Allied and Central Powers went head-to-head covered in gabardine. Gabardine was one of the many wartime textiles created by Thomas Burberry, used to make raincoats for the soldiers of France and the United Kingdom.
Today, the trench coat remains a rainy day staple and a fashion classic. Nothing smartens up an outfit quicker than “the trench.” Whether you stick to the basic taupe shade, or prefer to spice things up with a funky color and print, there’s a trench out there just for you. We’ve chosen to revamp the classic trench by taking an alternative approach. Instead of sticking with the classics, how about breaking boundaries and going for a spotted trench coat. Animal print is back with a vengeance this season. From the high streets a la & Other Stories, to high fashion with Proenza Schouler prowling on the scene.
Take a walk on the wild side and pair your trench coat with a contrasting orange t-shirt and a pair of straight-leg blue jeans. To keep all eyes on your statement-making trench, slide into a simple pair of ballet flats and oversized black sunnies, for good measure; think Audrey Hepburn meets Zsa Zsa Gabor. Me-ow.
