It’s been a wild 13 years for the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) under Diane Von Furstenburg’s reign. We’ve seen a near-naked Rihanna, the recognition of streetwear, and a new influencer award that shimmied straight into Kim Kardashian-West’s pocket. But it seems like the New York designer’s time as chairman may be up.
DVF is reportedly stepping down from her role at the CFDA this year, and, according to WWD, her replacement is looking like none other than true renaissance man Tom Ford. The oft-controversial designer/director is one of America’s most-revered talents, and, if elected, will undoubtedly take the council to a whole other level.
However, the rumors of Ford’s nomination at this moment are just that: rumors—although we do know the CFDA will be putting the chairman position to a vote early next week. If successful, Ford will take over control of New York Fashion Week and, of course, the annual CFDA Awards, following in the footsteps of icons such as Oscar de la Renta, Perry Ellis, and Carolyne Roehm.
Thus far, the CFDA has refrained from commenting on the matter. Still, fingers crossed!
