J Brand x Bella Freud just collaborated. And it’s really good.

London-based fashion designer Bella Freud has become a go-to authority of cool, coveted for her retro sweaters and 70s schoolgirl style. The English wunderkind already counts resident ‘it’ girls like Alexa Chung and Kate Moss as fans, and now she’s bringing her British wit stateside thanks to a new collab with J Brand. Following other designer capsules with Proenza Schouler, Christopher Kane and Simone Rocha, the LA denim line has a knack for weaving emerging global talent into its California denim roots. J Brand has tapped into Bella Freud’s signature 70s-femme-meets-tomboy-youth spirit, giving their all-American label a dose of Insta-cool.

The J BRAND x BELLA FREUD collaboration features 25 pieces and 10 “iconic’” looks. The capsule marks the designer’s first foray into denim, marrying her quirky aesthetic with their denim expertise. She deems the collection like a “ ‘Gang of Love,’ channeling sisterhood, camaraderie and fun,” comprising all the essentials for a cool girl uniform. The collab includes her cultish cashmere statement sweaters with a bookish twist – saying Boy Girl and Pretty Baby – knit in a range of pastels, neutrals and metallics. The capsule is definitely ‘borrowed from the boys,’ with boxy snap-up denim jackets, a sexy utilitarian jumpsuit and relaxed straight legs. The juxtaposition alongside shrunken tees, miniskirts and throwback high-waisted flares gives the line a fierce, self-possessed attitude. In Bella’s words, “ a girl in a cool pair of jeans is like Botticelli’s Venus – you never get tired of watching her.”

The collection is available for pre-order until it drops on July 25th.
