Very few moments in the day are as bare as the moment you wake up. We each have our own kinks and quirks that help us get out of bed, but few of us are brave enough to share them with the world. Introducing A Cool Morning, a deep dive into the intimate daytime rituals of our coolest friends and beauty innovators.
Fact: Keeping up with a daily beauty routine can, at times, feel like a chore. Now, imagine keeping up with your beauty routine while also trying to run a successful business—and raising a toddler. That’s what it’s like for Honor MD co-founder Ursula Diaz.
The former model and makeup artist may have a lot on her plate at the moment, but she still finds room to practice the art of self-care, one can of La Colombe at a time. Below, Diaz opens up about her go-to beauty and wellness routine.
What’s the first thing you do every morning?
Drink a La Colombe draft latte. I’m so obsessed with this drink that my husband got me a subscription so I never run out.
Do you have a morning workout routine?
When I have time to workout, I prefer to do it in the morning. I love to do some kind of HIIT (high intensity interval training) workout that works various muscle groups simultaneously. It saves me time, and I still get a great workout in.
Shower at-night, morning, or both?
I shower in the morning. I love how refreshed and awake it makes me feel.
Daily alarm time? How many times do you hit snooze?
5:30 a.m. Three times!
If you’re running late, what’s the one thing you have to do?
Apply Laura Mercier’s Secret Concealer under my eyes. It instantly makes me look more awake and feel more confident. It really melts into the skin while giving just the right amount of coverage. It’s like magic!
Scrambled egg whites, sourdough toast, berries, and coffee.
Weirdest morning beauty habit?
I take a cocktail of supplements after breakfast: DIM Complex, fish oil, CoQ10, a prenatal vitamin, and vitamin C.
What does your morning hair-care routine look like?
I love a fresh blowout. I feel like my day is better when my hair is clean (my colorist hates that I wash my hair so often). I use Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil by Bumble and Bumble and Shu Uemura Blow Dry Beautifier Thermo BB Cream. I swear this BB cream cuts my blowout time in half and it smells so good. Since I’m usually pressed for time, I rough dry it and then use a wand to create beachy waves.
How much time do you spend on your skincare routine?
10-15 minutes. I’m usually in a rush, so I like to use “multi-tasking” products. I use The Honor System by Honor MD Skincare: a gentle antioxidant cleanser (that can double as a moisture mask); Tropical Mist, a pH balancing toner that is super hydrating and smells like vacation; and a treatment serum called Genetically Blessed, which literally does everything. If I’m not using my treatment serum, I like to use H(ope)2O hyaluronic acid serum as my moisturizer after the toning mist. The last step in a tinted sunscreen by Elta MD. It’s one of the only sunscreens that doesn’t irritate my acne-prone skin.
How long do you usually take to get ready for the day?
If I don’t have any meetings or events, 20-30 minutes. If I do, it usually takes me 45 minutes to an hour. I blame my thick hair that takes forever to dry.
What’s the one product you could never leave the house without putting on?
That is a close tie between sunscreen and concealer.
Your favorite morning read?
I like to skim the New York Times, Cosmetic Executive Women, and The Beauty Independent.
What’s on your nightstand right now?
Oh Crap Potty Training and Becoming Michelle Obama—we’re potty training our toddler this weekend. Wish us luck!
What’s the current ringtone on your alarm?
Vibrate. Not sure why I have it on vibrate since my husband gets up before me and I am usually up before my daughter…
Coffee, tea, or go-to morning drink?
For sure coffee. I am truly obsessed with the La Colombe draft latte; it comes in a can which sounds kind of gross, but I swear it’s amazing.
What’s the last thing you did before you headed out the door today?
I kissed my beautiful baby girl.
