A Vintage Fashion Insider On How To Find The Perfect Pieces

Vintage shopping is not for the faint of heart. It takes time, and a lot of disappointment to find that special item that you can’t live without. Of course, it’s worth it because, in the end, you will end up with a piece that is not only sustainable but likely something so many other people won’t have.

Still, vintage shopping can be daunting especially with so many options out there, from apps to hidden gems in random towns.

That’s why we talked to Anna Gray, an inspirational writer, curator, and founder of Object Limited—a one-stop-shop for different vintage retailers—about her top tips for finding great vintage.

Tip #1 – Look at the materials: While you may be lucky enough to find an incredible vintage piece made of polyester, Gray advises inspecting the material to know whether or not it’s actually a good find. Oftentimes, you’ll find rayon material with a silk price tag.

Tip #2 – Be patient: When you’re shopping vintage, sometimes you’ll see a lot of great almost-there pieces but not exactly what you want. The only thing you can do is be patient with it. Vintage will always be there and that item you’re looking for can be found. It’s like Gray says, just take your time.

Tip #3 – You can always resell it: This tip may feel random, but it’s important to remember. (Especially when purchasing from a curated vendor.) Sometimes, a piece of vintage clothing may seem like it’s in your size, but once you get it home, something about the fit is off. After all, things were different in the ’80s. Gray says that there are plenty of ways for you to resell the piece if it’s not quite right for you, so the risk is lowered.
