Yayoi Kusama Is Collaborating on a Line of Skateboards With MoMA

Superstar artist Yayoi Kusama and MoMA are teaming up to drop a very fire, very polka-dotted line of skateboards. Dots Obsession and Yellow Trees, two of Kusama’s most famous works, will be painted on the boards.

These limited-edition decks will be released in October on MoMA’s online store, and there will 500 made. This isn’t the first time the museum has turned modern art into skateboards — they’ve offered both Andy Warhol’s soup cans and Jean-Michel Basquiat’s famous Untitled – Skull painting on boards, too.

MoMA told It’s Nice That that “the original skateboards began as samples based on digital renderings of details from Kusama’s work. They were sent to Kusama’s studio in Tokyo for her approval. After reviewing them, Kusama decided they needed to be altered. She then meticulously hand-painted her famous motif over each deck.”

In other Kusama news, a new documentary about the artist, Kusama: Infinity, is slated for release Sept. 7 and will explore the life of the most successful living female artist. The 89-year-old artist became hugely popular because of her Infinity Mirror Rooms, an installation that people line up for hours to see (and photograph themselves for Instagram).

Now, thanks to MoMA, Kusama will be coming to a skatepark near you.
