A$AP Rocky might be lauded as the most fashionable rapper, but Young Thug is definitely a contender for the unofficial title. Thugger, as he’s known by his fans, has quietly gone from little-known rapper to gender-queer, style icon (for lack of a better word) in the past couple of years. Young Thug has always projected a fairly fashionable image, routinely posting photos of his painted nails and outfits to Instagram, but it wasn’t until he wore a lavender Alessandro Trincone dress on the cover of “Jeffery” in 2016 that people really began to take note of his style.
In his latest music video “Chanel (Go Get It)”, Young Thug continues to redefine what it means to “dress like a rapper” in 2018. So, what exactly does that mean? Or look like? A lot like Thugger choosing to wear whatever he damn well pleases. “In my world, you can be a gangsta with a dress or you can be a gangsta with baggy pants,” he said in a #MyCalvins video for Calvin Klein in 2016. Clearly, rebelling against style codes isn’t a new concept for the Atlanta-born rapper, but in case you need a reminder, let’s revisit some of his more prolific style moments, shall we?
2014: The Ombré Effect
Thugger wholeheartedly embraced the ombré trend at the SXSW Fader Fort in 2014, pairing a dress-length plaid top with skin-tight pants.
2014: High Maintenance
Always a step ahead of the curve, Young Thug knew graphic t-shirts were cool before they were a runway staple for brands like Gucci and Dior.
2014: Pre-Gorpcore Gorpcore
Young Thug is actually the godfather of Gorpcore.
2015: Get The Strap
Check out that Fendi belt, tho.
Thugger wore a ruffled shirt before Gucci made them cool.
2015: Huckleberry Thugger
White denim overalls and crystal-embellished Giuseppe Zanotti hi-tops? We see you, Thugger Thugger.
2016: The Statement Coat
Return of the (Fashion) Jedi.
2017: Indoor Outerwear
Thugger broke the rules, and probably a sweat, by wearing a shearling jacket inside of a club.
2017: The Gun Show
Thugger bared his arms at Rihanna’s annual Diamond Ball last year in a sleeveless suit jacket.
2018: Sweater Weather
Gotta love a man who isn’t afraid of some sparkle.
