Azealia Banks Released An Ode to Anna Wintour

Azealia Banks has made either your new dance floor jam or the song that you should blast before going into an important meeting or job interview. Banks’ ode to Anna Wintour with her new song “Anna Wintour” has icy, quick beats as it sings the praises of the editor’s cool-as-a-cucumber exterior.

Produced by Junior Sanchez, the track is the “first formal offering” from long-awaited album Fantasea II. There hasn’t been a release date set for the album, but it will be released by Entertainment One. The album will be the sequel to her 2012 mixtape Fantasea.  Last month, Banks released a single called “Movin’ On Up”, a collaboration with Newbody.

In an Instagram post explaining the song’s origins, Banks wrote: “I relate to Anna Wintour so much as a strong, powerful and larger than life soul in a petite, tidy and feminine body. While others may see Anna as intimidating, I see a woman who was born into this world with an absolute certainty about her place in it.”

She also said that the song was “about finding myself and finding God. This song was written to embody the feeling felt when you connect with the universe.” One wouldn’t necessarily connect Wintour with “finding God” but leave it to Banks to give the famous editor a new context.

It doesn’t appear that Banks has met Wintour, but she did appear in Vogue in 2014. Also, one need not meet Anna Wintour to feel her intimidating radiance. “You know the glow stuntin’ in front row / Shades always, these bitches can’t look, no / Bob sleek-chic petite, I fit those / En Vogue, I do what you can’t know”

Wintour has been name-checked in other rap songs before by Kanye West, A$AP Mob, The Weeknd, and Nicki Minaj. Listen to Banks’ new song below:
