Beyoncé x Nefertiti Collection Has Dropped, And It’s Very Ancient Egyptian Chic

Beyoncé’s spring 2018 merch collection has dropped, and it channels the strength and power of Nefertiti, the ancient Egyptian queen circa 1300 B.C. who’s thought to have ruled the New Kingdom after her husband died. As Paper’s headline so aptly stated, queen recognize queen.

The collection consists of five tops, including a bright, orange crop top, t-shirts, and a hoodie. All have images of Beyoncé, depicted as Nefertiti, from black-and-white contact sheets to large-scale photos. The white crop top features an image of Bey in full, golden color. Prices range from $35 for a t-shirt to $60 for a hoodie.

History lesson time: Nefertiti was the wife of Pharaoh Akhenaten, and she was queen alongside her husband from 1353 to 1336 B.C. She’s thought to have ruled the New Kingdom after her husband’s death. Her name means “the beautiful woman has come,” and she’s recognized as a symbol of feminine power and beauty. Despite her status as one of the most famous ancient royalty, her burial tomb has never been discovered.

Beyoncé has a history of admiring ancient Egyptian culture, from her Cleopatra costume at the 2017 Grammys to her depiction of Deena Jones as Cleopatra in Dreamgirls. A Nefertiti statue even made a cameo in her pregnancy photo shoot. In the video for her song “Sorry”, she wore a Nefertiti-inspired hairstyle.

In the meantime, seemingly the entire world is still trying to answer the question, who bit Beyoncé?! Girls Trip star Tiffany Haddish said in an interview with GQ that an actress “bit Beyoncé in the face” one night in December 2017 at an afterparty for a Jay-Z concert. Multiple celebrities have been asked about the incident, from Queen Latifah to Lena Dunham to Shirley MacLaine, whose spokesperson said, “No, Shirley did not bite anything. She’s 83 years old, for God’s sake.” In the meantime, the mystery continues and Beyoncé keeps being the Queen.
