Balenciaga’s artistic director announced the book by saying that, “a show is an experience and this book is a tool for remembering it.”
This is Gvasalia’s first book for the house, and Pierre-Ange Carlotti and Johnny Dufort were the photographers chosen to go backstage for the show, which featured a graffiti-covered snow slope. The pair captured the process in their signature styles; while Carlotti has a more film-oriented, intimate approach, Dufort’s style tends toward more overexposed and subtly humorous.
The book has also inspired Gvasalia to explore new ways to commemorate each season’s show.
“I realized that every I show I do from now on for Balenciaga is cinematographic in terms of concept and setup,” he said. “I’d like to accompany each of them with some memorabilia, something that actually puts you into that show and the process behind it.”
