Frances Bean Cobain Debuted Her First Original Song on Instagram

Frances Bean Cobain, daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, released a short video of her first original song to Instagram. In a brief post that now appears to have been removed, Cobain sang without instrumental accompaniment in a strong, emotive voice.

She sang, “I think I saw you when I was small,” she sings. “I think I found you, a penny for your good thoughts/ I think I found you, Jesus hangs in your place on the cross.” The video came on the eve of the 24th anniversary of her father’s death. She explained in the video’s caption that the musical post was inspired by not having a TV and having some creative energy to spare.

“I’m super restless because I can’t play guitar with long nails so I’m just sitting in my room alone singin’ to mah self,” Cobain wrote. “Not having a TV in my house is the best decision because I’m forced to occupy my time with things that feed my brain and soul instead of wasting energy on thinking about not having to think.”

This isn’t the first time the 25-year-old Cobain has shared her musical talents on Instagram. She posted a cover of Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle” to social media in 2016 and covered Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” in January. The model and visual artist announced in February that, though she didn’t reveal the specifics, she’s been sober for two years now.

In an Instagram post, she said, “It’s an interesting and kaleidoscopic decision to share my feelings about something so intimate in a public forum. The fact that I’m sober isn’t really public knowledge, decidedly and deliberately. But I think it’s more important to put aside my fear about being judged or misunderstood or typecast as one specific thing.”

The internet is, obviously, a very complicated place to present anything vulnerable. While it’s not clear why she removed the video, hopefully Cobain will continue to share her music with the world.
