Gender-Neutral Emojis Are Coming to Your iPhone

Androgynous characters will be coming to your iPhone with the iOS 11.1 update

After their initial announcement on World Emoji Day, Apple has introduced hundreds of new emojis, including the addition of androgynous characters (and slightly more random ones like a dumpling and a curling iron) for iOS 11.1.

Apple says that iOS 11.1 will also include characters announced on World Emoji Day like Woman with Headscarf, Bearded Person, Breastfeeding, Zombie, Person in Lotus Position and new food items such as Sandwich and Coconut. An “I love you” hand sign in American Sign Language will also be included.

Fun fact: There’s a nonprofit Silicon Valley committee called the Unicode Consortium (or as the Los Angeles Times dubbed them, the “shadowy overlords) that approves new emojis. The Consortium added different races in 2015, and, last year, a 15-year-old girl named Rayouf Alhumedhi designed and proposed a hijab emoji.

According to BuzzFeed News, the new emojis will be rolling out globally on Monday, October 9, as part of the second public beta of iOS 11.1. Users should likely expect the emojis in the official version of iOS 11.1 at the end of October or early November.
