Gucci’s New Book Features Rare Photos Of Downtown New York

Thankfully, there has been considerable documentation of famous creatives eating, to really ram home that they are, well, just like us. We’re known to be fascinated by any mundanity in the lives of the rich and famous, which is why these pictures of Ryan, Kirsten and Jake, and Kim contorting her face around a salad leaf to avoid smearing her lip gloss, are so instantly recognizable. Now, Gucci is publishing a book about itkind of.

In conjunction with Dashwood Books, the luxury label has compiled many, many photos of famous artists eating. Each image actually comes via artist Paige Powell, one of Andy Warhol’s favorites, who dedicated much of her life to shooting extraordinary people living ordinary lives during the ’70s and ’80s.

Powell, who arrived in New York as a Portland transplant, eventually became a co-publisher of Interview and was a regular among the cult of art kids running the downtown scene. (She is alleged to have been romantically involved with Jean-Michel Basquiat.) While she’s notoriously shy about her photos, Gucci hopes to give them the spotlight they deserve with a set of four books (including Artist Eating), coupled with a month-long exhibit at their Soho store in New York City.

Check out some of Powell’s iconic imagery, below.
