How Editor Koura-Rosy Kane Is Reimagining Today’s Trends

Want to know more about the people behind some of Instagram’s coolest accounts? Introducing Street Noise, our answer to the trends happening on the streets—and on our feeds. We’re going straight to the source for intel on how it all goes down.

Koura-Rosy Kane, fashion curator and writer at French magazine Platform, takes unique to a new level. Her Instagram is dedicated to experimental high-fashion shoots and outfits using pieces from the most visionary up-and-coming designers. With her extensive mental catalogue of looks, it’s no surprise we’re obsessed with her eye for style. Below, we catch up with Kane about shopping vintage, her favorite designers, and the importance of ‘re-interpreting’ trends.

Where do you live?

KR: “I know this is a common question and usually easy to answer, but it’s quite complicated for me, especially lately. I was born and raised in Lyon, France. I used to live in London, and now I’m in Montréal for a few months. I really don’t know what will be my next destinationprobably another European city. Thanks to the fashion industry, I’m able to travel often, which it’s a good thing.”

Where are your favorite places to shop?

KR: “I’m really into emerging brands and vintage shops, so I would say the best place to shop according those preferences is definitely London. This city is home to such talented emerging labels and also has some of my favorite vintage shops. Generally, when I’m hunting for new places to shop, I’m looking on Instagram.”

What are brands are you loving right now?

KR: “1. A.W.A.K.E: It’s a fashion label based in London and the designer, Natalia [Alaverdian] is a shaping killer; 2. Super Yaya: Created by Rym Beydoun, this fashion label is a treasure from Abidjan; 3. Mowalola: Her last collection was a real success during London Fashion Week; 4. Thebe Magugu: Based in Johannesburg, this designer knows perfectly how to make fashion and intelligence coherent; 5. Vaquera: A group of four designers from New York, I love the way they transform absurd into statement.”

What are your go-to outfit essentials?

KR: “Beautiful shoes, a very nice bag, and a stunning coat/jacket. I’m really obsessed with proper shoes. I’m convinced that accessories overall can change the simplest of silhouettes.”

Tell us your style philosophy.

KR: “First of all, I will say that the notion of ‘style’ refers to something personal. I think it’s important to make the distinction, because my fashion philosophy would be different from my style philosophy. So, if I stick to that, I would say it’s mainly focused on adaptation. What is important with clothes and ‘trends’ is that you have to re-interpret them. Without this, personal interpretation feels impersonal. And, after all, the main function of style and clothes is to express your identity. Even sociologically, styleand fashion—is a medium for self-expression, although it was used as a social status vector in the past.”
