Looking for 4/20 Plans? Lucy Hale Is A Feminist Stoner In Netflix’s New Comedy

Netflix is about to release the stoner version of Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants on, when else, but 4/20. Starring Lucy Hale, the trailer for the new comedy Dude looks amazing.

There are lots of bongs and lots of dick jokes, and the cast brings an inclusive crew to the table, with Alexandra Shipp (Straight Outta Compton and Love, Simon), Kathryn Prescott (Skins), and Nora Lum aka Awkwafina (the upcoming Ocean’s 8). The coming-of-age film looks sweet and funny, with Hale getting pulled over at one point by a cop who spots a Donkey Kong bong in her backseat.

“I don’t know what the f-ck you’re thinking, driving around with a bong in the backseat of your car. Who do you think you are, Willie Nelson?,” the cop says to Hale’s character Lily. “Even he got arrested.”

As weed becomes an increasingly female-friendly industry, with stylish magazines and minimally chic boutiques dedicated to making it accessible, it’s cool to see a comedy like this come along that normalizes the usage of it. (In other words, not portraying these girls as burn-outs but instead as fairly typical high school students.)

Dude is written and directed by Olivia Milch, who co-wrote the upcoming Ocean’s 8. If an interview with Sirius XM anchor Sway is any indication, Hale doesn’t seem to be a stoner in real life. In the interview, she recounted getting into trouble with former Pretty Little Liars co-star Ashley Benson. “Y’all weren’t smoking weed or nothing like that?,” Sway asked to which Hale replied, “No.”

Other important notes from the trailer: Lily prefers to take dumps at school and the girls all agree they would prefer to have vaginas for ears over penises for fingers because, as Awkwafina’s character explains, “If you had dick fingers, you could not wear rings. But if you had vaginas for ears, you could wear earrings!”

And with that actually pretty sound rationale, here’s the trailer below:
