It started when This Is Us star Moore posted a #TBT Thursday of herself and Hathaway posing together on a red carpet at the film’s premiere in July 2001. “I guess this film came out just over 17 years ago?? ? @annehathaway was already a movie star and I showed up to my first premiere in a casual denim suit. Hey, it was 2001! #tbt #theprincessdiaries,” Moore wrote in the caption.
Also, no worries, Mandy Moore, the early-2000s are back and your denim suit might be trendy again! Hathaway responded in the comments explaining what was going on in the photo and making a fun reference to the scene in Princess Diaries where she throws ice cream at Moore’s character Lana.
“That’s the face I make when I’m trying not to flop sweat on a terrifically famous pop star. So happy for all that you have going on! Let’s get together and throw ice cream at each other soon,” she wrote. Moore responded with, “Hello friend! Count me in. It’d be an honor to be coned by you again!”
In the film, Hathaway plays awkward-teenager-turned-royalty Mia Thermopolis. Moore plays Lana, a popular cheerleader and stereotypical bully. Before he died, director Garry Marshall told People that he was planning a third installment of the franchise.
Princess Diaries author Meg Cabot told Entertainment Weekly that a script for the film does exist, and that if the movie gets made, it would be “kind of as a tribute” to Marshall.
