Is The Matte Makeup Trend Finally Drying Out?

We all remember our first encounter with the matte trend, considering it started not too long ago. It was 2015 when a young(er) Kylie Jenner added hyaluronic acid injections to her lips and slathered on thick coats of opaque, highly pigmented colors. The then-gloss-covered world was shook to its core: It was a revolutionary finish that created a plush, velvet-soft look (and one that gave our lips a break from globs of sticky Lancôme Juicy Tubes).

Soon, liquid lipsticks from Kylie Cosmetics and Kat Von D Beauty replaced our collection of glosses. But the matte finish didn’t stop at lips: It permeated nail polishes, foundations, eye shadows, and even hair. No longer were we chasing the shine.

Three years later, though, and it seems like things have changed. With 2018 coming to a close, we’re seeing glosses and satin products being slathered across some of the industry’s most influential lips, eyes, and cheeks. Even Mario Dedivanovic — the godfather of modern makeup artists and Kim Kardashian West’s right-hand beauty man — told Into The Gloss back in 2017 that he “hopes” the matted trend dies a swift death. Well, it seems like that moment has come.

As we look to the year ahead, words like “dew,” “balm,” and “gloss” are about to invade the beauty-sphere. Below, check out the trends that are putting the moisture back into our pouts in 2019:

As the minimalist makeup trend grows stronger, the lighter our lipsticks become. Today, so many of our go-to beauty bloggers are using slightly pigmented lipsticks for a sheer, tinted finish. It’s easy to create and will help you achieve that forever-sought-after no-makeup-makeup look.

Glossy isn’t just making a comeback on your lips — it’s becoming the look for your entire face. Here, your makeup pulls triple-duty, with your cheeks, eyelids, and lips getting covered in the same semi-liquid texture, creating a luminous finish that packs in the hydration.

As the holiday season approaches, we can’t help but mimic holographic tinsels and ornaments. That’s why we’re grabbing our shiniest lipsticks and eyeshadows to create a look that can be spotted from outer space.

This K-Beauty trend has hit the world in a dew-covered whirlwind. Sure, it uses the rigorous 10-step Korean skin regimen that many of us don’t have the time or energy for, but it combines makeup and skincare to create radiance from outward-in.

This purposefully messy style was birthed by MAC Cosmetics during London Fashion Week in February. It’s an unexpected look that requires little to no diligence: just dab some lipstick or lip liner, smudge it around, and dab on a bit of gloss to make it pop.
