It’s officially May—well nearly mid-May—so yes, obvs, duh. On the not so obvious front, it is also all of a sudden summer. Who knew? Longer days, rising temps, falling cherry blossoms on one hand. On the other, awkward transitional dressing, a constant need for sunglasses and the occasional boob sweat. I, for one, am welcoming all the good, bad and ugly with open arms; I love summer.
But before we make it official (see June 21st), there are a few important dates that need attending to. Mother’s Day is coming up this weekend, and what better way to usher in a new season than celebrating the woman that gave you life with budding blooms and sparkling gifts. I know what you’re thinking. Jewelry is so expected; where’s the fun in that? Don’t sweat it. SS18 was one of the most interesting seasons in the accessories department, meaning Mom will be stylish and satisfied. Read on for four trends to shop this Mother’s Day (and maybe something for yourself too).
- Plastic Fantastic
Spring’s favorite transparent trend is still going strong. And no it has made its way into our jewelry drawers in the form of brightly colored and boldly shaped baubles. Go mod with architectural shapes that feel sophisticated and timeless. These work great for the arty mom, or the mom who needs a pop of color in her wardrobe without going too crazy.

2. Chiquita Banana
Like a fruit basket, for your face. This is one of my favorite trends because there is literally no way to go wrong with tropical accessories. It is the easiest way to add excitement to an otherwise neutral wardrobe. Go big or go home with this trend. Flowers! Figs! Pom poms! Have fun with it, and guaranteed, every onlooker you pass will too.
3. Mix N’ Match
This is the answer to all of your lost earring woes. The mismatched look is back in style and actually quite fashionable. Pick a pair for Mom that is coated in one uniform color – either gold, silver or something in between – in a pretty geometric shape. Best worn with tousled hair and a laidback attitude.
4. Make A Statement
Think crystal chandelier, but make it fashion. The great news is that statement earrings never go out of style. A ton of designers have taken the typical bling and gone next level with size, shape and scale. You don’t have to go full on trendy for Mom, but pick a sparkler with an elegant shape and always always consider the weight of the piece.
